Local History

The Valemount Public Library serves the Valemount area and provides books, videos, compact discs, and free Internet access to its patrons.

The Valemount Public Library was started in the 1950s. Since that time we have occupied five different locations. First was a private home, then four other buildings, each one increasing in size to accommodate our growing collection.

We moved into our present location in April of 1988. The log library was built in Valemount by a local log-builder. Money for this structure was provided by an Expo Legacy Grant from Vancouver’s Expo ’86 and it was built on property owned by the Village of Valemount.

We share the property with the Valemount and Area Museum; the property is maintained through a combined effort of Library, Museum and Village Public Works staff. The area is a beautiful park-like setting, with benches, tables and a playground surrounded by trees and flowers.

Our library’s operational needs have been covered under the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George referendum since 1982. Included in the Robson Valley/Canoe Libraries Service are the libraries from Valemount and McBride. We receive our funding through the submission and approval of an Annual Budget. We are a member of the North Central Library Federation, (NCLF), and receive guidance and support from that group. Our library operates as an independent, managed by a board of volunteers. All functions such as ordering of books, maintenance of the collection, and development of services are handled by the library director and staff.

We feel that the library is very important to the community and do our best to present a welcoming and friendly atmosphere to our patrons. We hope you enjoy the library and all of its resources. Thank you for visiting our website.
